Do you ever feel insignificant? That you have nothing of value to contribute, or that what you offer is overlooked or disregarded by others?
I have felt that way often and it is so easy to give in to those feelings- to back off and hide away and isolate yourself, to stay silent and remain in the background, to hold back instead of offering what you have.
No matter how strong those feelings are though, they are lies, and we have to fight against them.
The truth is:
- You matter.
- You are lovingly designed and created by God.
- You are unique.
- You have a part to play for Him that only you can play.
In 1 Corinthians 12, Paul describes Christians as “the body of Christ“. We are all different parts but we make up one body. We are not meant to be the same as everyone else. We are not meant to compare ourselves to others and feel inadequate because we can’t do all that they can. We are meant to be ourselves, and to play our unique part.
Paul writes that “God has put each part just where he wants it.” and we all need each other. If you’re reading this and thinking “yes, but I’m too weak, I’m not important, ” then check out 1 Corinthians 12:22: “In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary.“
We’re not meant to live in a bubble of isolation or self-protection. We are created to love and serve one another, to rejoice with one another, to mourn with one another and to value one another.
It makes me realise that holding back is not so much humble as selfish. If this is how God has created me, who am I to say it’s not enough? Instead I need to accept the person he has made me to be, trust that he knows what he’s doing and play my part in the body so that we might grow together.
“He makes the whole body fit together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the body is healthy and growing and full of love.” (Ephesians 4:16)
