Before we start, if you’ve been a regular visitor here and haven’t read Monday’s post yet, you might want to do that first, otherwise it will all get a bit confusing.  Thank you to all of you who have visited the post for your encouraging comments.  And if you’re new here, hello and welcome!

I remember those days in PE class, lining up along the edge of the hall, waiting as captains were selected and then took it in turns to choose members for their team. You could predict quite easily who was going to be chosen first- the sporty people and the popular people- but as the line grew shorter and shorter you could sense the anxiety levels rising.  No-one wanted to be the last one to be chosen- to feel that they hadn’t really been chosen at all, but allocated to a team by default because there was no-one else left to choose.

I never ended up in that position, though sometimes I wasn’t too far off it, but the fear was there, and I felt sorry for those who did, especially when it was the same people time and time again.  When I got to choose the team, I’d choose my friends first, regardless of their sporting ability, then a couple of the good players, but then I’d try to choose some of the ones who were always last, just so they wouldn’t feel left out, so they would feel for once that they had actually been chosen.

I like how Jesus chose his team.  He didn’t go for the obvious choices.  He didn’t select his team based on their intelligence or their abilities or their popularity.

He chose ordinary people- fishermen, tax collectors, people who were overlooked by others, people with a past, people who doubted and questioned and argued, people who didn’t have it all together, but who were willing to follow him.

That’s all he looks for- willingness to follow.  He calls us all to join his team and play our part in his work.

You are chosen, and I am chosen.  Sometimes we might doubt that or wonder why.  We might feel we have nothing to offer.  Sometimes we might look at those on the team around us and question why they’ve been chosen.  It’s not always be easy to work as a team.

But we are a team and each of us is chosen.  No-one is last with Jesus.  He calls us all to come and follow, each of us have different things to offer, and when we work together as a team, that brings glory to him and can have a great impact on others.

  1. Being the last one chosen seems such a universal story. I wonder how the telling goes if you were chosen first. I once had a discussion with a person who was jealous that Jesus was the first one chosen. With that spot taken she wondered if it was worth the effort to try out for the team. I marveled at that point of view .But then I marvel that God can love us so individually with so many children to love. I appreciate your feeling for being on his team. I feel grateful, too.

  2. Lesley, love this. I was often chose last. THIS: ” No-one wanted to be the last one to be chosen- to feel that they hadn’t really been chosen at all, but allocated to a team by default because there was no-one else left to choose.” I’m over in the 8 spot this week.

  3. You brought back some memories! I always chose the losers first, and told them to play dirty. Though since we were playing sandlot rugby, it was a bit difficult to tell the difference between the requisite hooliganism of the game and playing dirty!

Jesus plays dirty, too. Just when I feel that it’s really smarter to toss away hope, that darned Man sends me a sign that says, Hold On.

And its compelling enough, close enough to what I would have asked but never voiced, that I have to.

    1. Thanks, Andrew. I imagine that was an interesting game but I like that you chose the “losers.”
Praying for you and glad you’re still holding on, even though it’s tough. But even more I love your focus on Jesus and your willingness to keep following.

  4. That’s so kind of you to pick the ones that were often chosen last. What a difference in Jesus choosing His team! Not one of us needs to feel left out. I marvel how much He loves each one of us as if there were only one of us. Blessings and hugs to you, Lesley! I still have to catch myself sometimes. I see “Life In the Spacious Place,” and I think Carly! Oops. I’ll remember it yet. 🙂

    1. Thanks, Trudy. Yes, I love how Jesus sees each individual and that we all matter to him. I was listening to one of the songs you introduced me to- Sparrows by Jason Gray- and thinking about that earlier today.
Not a problem if it takes you a while to get used to the name. I’m still finding it all a bit strange in certain contexts too! Blessings and hugs to you!

  5. I finally made it over here! I love the contrasting picture of being picked for pe and how Jesus picked His team. It kinda makes it real. Thanks for stopping by again. Happy one year!

  6. Lesley,
“But we are a team and each of us is chosen.”
Reminds me of a Rich Mullins song, “creed” or “I believe”.
He tags the line “remember you did not choose me no I have chosen you”
Thank you for the reminder that I am chosen by Jesus and that no other would do for what He has chosen for me. I’m uniquely suited to do this! 🙂
    Love,

      1. Oops! Right artist, wrong song. “That Where I Am, There You May Also Be”. Creed is still a good song. Sometimes by Step and Awesome God are two of his more famous ones.

  7. Dear Lesley … for those of us who were at the end of the line when it came to be chosen in gym, it’s a special joy knowing that Christ has chosen us to be His very own beloved. What a Savior, what a Comforter!
