linking with Five Minute Friday– write for five minutes on a one-word prompt
The prompt today is “middle.”
also sharing with #LiveFreeThursday
From the middle of the story, it looks chaotic. So many strands of plot interwoven that it’s impossible to make sense of how they all connect.
In the middle of the story, there are so many questions: Why did that happen? How will this turn out? What will the future hold?
The middle of the story can be painful with hurt, sorrow, shattered dreams and unfulfilled longings.
But it can also be beautiful with love, kindness, friendship and courage, as help springs from unlikely places.
In the middle of the story it feels uncertain. Just when you think you know which way it is heading, an unexpected twist in the plot takes you by surprise- for good or for bad.
From the middle of the story our view is limited. We see one perspective but we struggle to comprehend the bigger picture.
Sometimes we don’t enjoy the middle of the story. We wish we could rush through it and skip ahead to the happy ending.
But in the middle of the story there is hope, because the author of the story entered the story to put things right, and one day we will see the story in its entirety and we will understand.
And for now, in the middle of the story, he walks with us, and however chaotic or painful or uncertain it feels, we can rest in the truth that he sees and he cares and we are not alone.
“Now we see things imperfectly, like puzzling reflections in a mirror, but then we will see everything with perfect clarity. All that I know now is partial and incomplete, but then I will know everything completely, just as God now knows me completely.” (1 Corinthians 13:12 NLT)
So true. The middle of the story is often a hard place. And sometimes I want to rush through, maybe even peek ahead, to ease my anxiety about not knowing how things will turn out. I’m a little impatient sometimes like that. 🙂 But, it is a place of opportunity as well. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, I think the anxiety that can come from the uncertainty about how things will turn out can be a big part of the reason why the middle of the story is often difficult. That’s when it’s reassuring to know that God can see the big picture even when we can’t. Thanks for visiting!

I loved your thoughts about middle. I am comforted by the Casting crowns song “You’re already there.”
When I’m lost in the mystery
To You my future is a memory
Cause You’re already there
You’re already there
Standing at the end of my life
Waiting on the other side
And You’re already there
You’re already there
I hope you have a lovely weekend!

So true. Coming into the middle of any story is chaotic. And at times, it’s hard to catch up. Enjoy your weekend.

I have been meditating on God’s omniscience because I find rest for my heart. He knows. He sees. He’s working. I don’t know it all. Nor can I see all the parts. The great story God is writing fits perfectly with his plot to bring about his glory.

Thanks, Cheryl. It is definitely reassuring to know that God sees the whole story and he knows what he’s doing even when we don’t understand.

I’m right with you! Sometimes I just want to see how my ending ends, but I have to remember to slow down and enjoy the middle while I have it. I enjoyed reading your post!

Thanks, Bonnie. I think there often are things to enjoy in the middle- we just need to slow down enough to notice them.

I too had considered writing the prompt about the middle of the story. What a great piece you have written here! I actually restrain myself from peeking at the end of a book but I definitely resonate with the questions that erupt in the middle. And so true for my life story. “But in the middle of the story there is hope, because the author of the story entered the story to put things right, and one day we will see the story in its entirety and we will understand.” Thanks for the reminder!

Thanks, Stephanie. I used to look ahead at the end of books all the time. I had to know if it would turn out ok. I’ve got a lot better at living with the tension now until I get there.

Great post. It is definitely hard to comprehend the end from the middle. Funny how hard we try to do just that. Well, I know I do. It is comforting to know that God already knows the end, and it will fit into His beautiful plan.
Dropping by from FMF. Thanks for visiting me too.

Yes, I also spend too much time trying to understand. It is reassuring to remember that God knows what he’s doing. Thanks for visiting, Kelly!!

Hi Lesley! Wow, is this a timely post for me. I certainly am in the ‘middle’ right now, continuing physical therapy for soreness and pain that just won’t quit. I have often gotten down and discouraged, but my husband has been so supportive.
I know that it will eventually be okay, but this living in the middle is really no fun at all. But as you say, my hero is with me. Jesus will walk it all at my side, and bring me to his healing. I have hope in the middle!
Blessings,
Ceil

Hi Ceil! It is definitely not fun when we’re in the middle of something painful and we don’t know how long it will last. I’m glad the post encouraged you. Praying that you know God with you while you’re waiting and that healing will come soon.

Great thoughts on how our story is inserted into the middle of His, we may not understand but we can follow the One who knows the beginning, ending and our ‘middle’ portion. Thanks!
