My Purpose In Blogging

This post is written to link with Five Minute Friday– write for five minutes on a one word prompt.  The prompt today is “purpose.”

It has been 18 months now since I started blogging.

When I began, I can’t say I had much of a purpose.  It was just something I felt drawn to.  I had written in journals for years but never shared my writing.  Then I felt that God was calling me to start to share my words, so tentatively I began.

I wasn’t sure how it would go or how long it would continue, but for 18 months now I have posted at least once a week (usually twice), I have taken part in Five Minute Friday almost every week and I have completed Write 31 Days twice.  I think it’s safe to say that writing is now a regular part of my life and I really value the support of the blogging community and the friendships I have made here.

Lately I’ve been thinking about my purpose though.  Blogging is obviously something I enjoy, but what is my purpose?  Or rather, what is God’s purpose?

I still feel I need more clarity on the specifics but a couple of weeks ago I came up with a tagline that I feel sums up in broad terms the purpose of this blog.  Seeing that the FMF prompt was “purpose” seemed like a good opportunity to explain.

The tagline is “Speaking truth, sharing hope.”

That is what I want to do through my words: to speak the truth of God’s Word and explore the relevance it has for our lives today, and to share hope- that because of Jesus there is always hope, whatever our circumstances.

It’s not just a purpose for blogging, but a purpose for life, and I want to run after that with the same focus and determination that Paul had about his purpose.

“My life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.”  (Acts 20:24 NLT)
