My Purpose In Blogging

This post is written to link with Five Minute Friday– write for five minutes on a one word prompt.  The prompt today is “purpose.”

It has been 18 months now since I started blogging.

When I began, I can’t say I had much of a purpose.  It was just something I felt drawn to.  I had written in journals for years but never shared my writing.  Then I felt that God was calling me to start to share my words, so tentatively I began.

I wasn’t sure how it would go or how long it would continue, but for 18 months now I have posted at least once a week (usually twice), I have taken part in Five Minute Friday almost every week and I have completed Write 31 Days twice.  I think it’s safe to say that writing is now a regular part of my life and I really value the support of the blogging community and the friendships I have made here.

Lately I’ve been thinking about my purpose though.  Blogging is obviously something I enjoy, but what is my purpose?  Or rather, what is God’s purpose?

I still feel I need more clarity on the specifics but a couple of weeks ago I came up with a tagline that I feel sums up in broad terms the purpose of this blog.  Seeing that the FMF prompt was “purpose” seemed like a good opportunity to explain.

The tagline is “Speaking truth, sharing hope.”

That is what I want to do through my words: to speak the truth of God’s Word and explore the relevance it has for our lives today, and to share hope- that because of Jesus there is always hope, whatever our circumstances.

It’s not just a purpose for blogging, but a purpose for life, and I want to run after that with the same focus and determination that Paul had about his purpose.

“My life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.”  (Acts 20:24 NLT)

  1. Love this. I have struggled with “purpose” in my blogging, worked hard in the beginning of mine to keep a focus and it felt unnatural, so I’m going with my original ideas of sharing things that have made me smile, gave me a lightbulb moment, or have some other significance in helping me find my happy. 🙂 Thanks for your post. I enjoyed reading it.

    1. Thanks for visiting! I like your idea for your blog. I think it’s important to be ourselves and writing what comes naturally rather than trying to force things. I enjoyed your post too!

  2. This here… “It’s not just a purpose for blogging, but a purpose for life, and I want to run after that with the same focus and determination that Paul had about his purpose.”
That’s inspiring and motivating! I love it!
Keep running the good race, and shining for Him with all you do, Lesley! xxoo

  3. Thanks, Gabriele. I’m glad that comes across. It’s not really a new purpose, more just clarifying the purpose that was already there and being intentional about it.

  4. Love the tagline! So much THIS: “That is what I want to do through my words: to speak the truth of God’s Word and explore the relevance it has for our lives today, and to share hope- that because of Jesus there is always hope, whatever our circumstances.”

  5. Lesley, that is a beautiful purpose and tag line. The truth is our hope after all. I really believe when we can see and almost touch those purposes, we can live them so much more deeply. Beautiful post. 🙂

  6. Love that tagline, Lesley!

Mine is “You may not like it, but you have to show up.” Under the circumstances, the obligation of sharing the bright spots in a dark journey does keep me writing, and trying to share the light and the hope.

  7. Congrats on 18 months of blogging. It’s been a longer journey for me, off and on since 2010. Yet, I’ve learned much and I do have a greater sense of God’s purpose for my life through blogging. Your neighbor #22 at this week’s #fmf

  8. Hi Lesley! I think it’s such a great idea to revisit your reasons for blogging. We should all do that! It is time consuming, and forces me to really think about my life and my life in the spirit too.
Inspiring hope is a great goal, and I think you are successful at doing that. And don’t you think it’s true that as you write to inspire others, you wind up inspiring yourself too?
    Sunday blessings to you,
    Ceil

    1. Thanks, Ceil. It is good to stop from time to time and consider why we do what we do.
I’m glad you think my writing inspires hope and I agree, we often end up inspiring ourselves too! I’m amazed how often God works in that way, and I am often inspired and blessed by people’s comments too. I love that blogging is also about starting a conversation.

  9. I’m glad you’ve made writing a regular part of your life. Same with me. It’s been a great outlet and a growing faith opportunity as well. Speaking truth and sharing hope are two excellent goals!
