If you have been following my blog, you’ll know that my One Word for 2017 is Voice. I realise it’s an unusual choice; this post explains if you want to read more about why I chose this word.
I don’t know about you, but I learn anything better when it’s set to music, so I have been looking out for different songs around this theme to remind me of truth and reinforce the lessons I have been learning.
Here are five of my favourite songs I have discovered so far, and I love how each of them covers a different aspect of the word Voice. The song titles link to YouTube videos.
This song reminds me of the power of God’s voice. He created the whole universe just by speaking, and his voice continues to give life: “I assure you that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when the dead will hear my voice—the voice of the Son of God. And those who listen will live.” (John 5:25 NLT)
“Say the word and there is light;
Say the word and dead bones rise.
Every start and end hangs on Your voice,
For Your word never returns void.”
This song speaks of the importance of taking time to be still and listen for God’s voice. Often he speaks in a gentle whisper and we need to shut out things that may distract us from what he has to say.
“I will wait for You,
I will wait for You
And my heart will be the listener.
I will wait for You,
I will wait for You
And I will find You in the whisper.
In the stillness there is healing,
In the calm You mend my soul,
In the silence You are speaking,
I am not alone.”
God’s voice is not the only voice we hear. The voice of the enemy often tries to drown out his gentle whisper by shouting lies. This song reminds me that we have to choose which voice to listen to and that in God’s Word we have powerful truth to combat the lies.

This song reminds me that, just as God’s words have power, the words we say also have tremendous power. Often we remember the impact of negative words that have been said to us, but our words also have amazing power for good. A simple word of encouragement can make a big difference. “Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful, so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” (Ephesians 4:29 NLT)
“Speak life, speak life
To the deadest darkest night.
Speak life, speak life
When the sun won’t shine and you don’t know why.
Look into the eyes of the broken hearted;
Watch them come alive as soon as you speak hope,
You speak love, you speak,
You speak life.”
Finally, this song reminds me that following God often means speaking for him. It means sharing our stories with others, testifying to what God has done in our lives. Often this can be scary and can call us out of our comfort zones, but it is an amazing privilege to be used by God in this way.
What songs have been speaking to you lately? I always love to learn new ones, so feel free to share a recommendation in the comments.
