When You Don’t Feel Inspired

This post is written to link with Five Minute Friday– write for five minute on a one-word prompt.  The prompt today is “inspire.”

When You Don't Feel Inspired...

Do you ever have those days when you just don’t feel inspired?

I’ve felt like that a lot lately.  It shows itself in different areas, but this week it has been over writing.

“You’re a bad writer!”
“You have nothing worthwhile to say.”
“No-one wants to read your words anyway.”

The voice in my head goes on and on, draining me of motivation and enthusiasm and hope.

But then I remember that writing was never my idea, and I turn my gaze to the one who called me.

I think of Moses at the burning bush, called to a task far too big for him:

“Who am I to go to Pharaoh?”
“Who am I to lead the Israelites?”
“I can’t speak; I’ll get my words mixed up.”
“No-one will listen.”

And I recall God’s reply:

“I AM.  I will be with you.”

I hear the same words and remember that it’s not about my ability or confidence.  It’s not up to me to make it happen.  It’s not about me at all.  It’s about him, and his power is unlimited.

So, freshly inspired, I get up and keep going.  As I step out and obey, it doesn’t guarantee that it will always go well, but I can rest in the certainty that he will be with me.

Come and join us here to read more Five Minute Friday posts on the word “inspire” and to check out this wonderful community of people that inspires me to write, even when I feel I have nothing to say, and always encourages me to keep going.

  1. Hi Lesley, those writing doubts seem to plague so many of us. Your solution is fantastic though, Moses was looking at the task and who he was in himself, forgetting Who he was complaining to. I do this all the time, forgetting that God is greatest in my weakness.

Great that you know God has called you to write, something to hold tightly to in the hard times.

  2. I should have read yours first, Lesley, because I still don’t feel inspired! Time to give myself some grace. I’m grateful you are obedient even when you aren’t feeling it.

    1. I’m sorry you’re not feeling inspired, Debby, but it is reassuring that others have these moments too. I love how FMF can motivate me to write something when I don’t feel inspired at all and sometimes once I get started the inspiration comes.

  3. I’m sorry you haven’t been feeling inspired. We’ve all been there at one time or another. I take comfort in the words of John 1:1–Jesus is the Word incarnate; that very first word. I’m in the 7 spot this week.

  4. Oh, that stupid, stupid voice. I hear it all the time. I believe, dear sister across the pond, that it is Satan trying to get us to forget that our Lord is far bigger and greater than any mountain we face. He wants to derail us, get us to walk the road of disobedience. How glad I am that you didn’t let that voice win! Prayers and hugs from far away.

  5. Hi, Lesley. You have much of the same self-doubt I have. I call her my “Sara nemesis”.
I’ve always identified with Moses’ inability to speak.
God chose him knowing this weakness and wanted to strengthen Moses but Moses didn’t see the big picture, he just saw himself.
God uses the least likely people
