The Everlasting Arms

This post is written to link with Five Minute Friday: write for five minutes on a one word prompt.  The prompt today is “support.”

world in his hands

We all need support.  None of us were made to deal with life on our own.  We all need friends and family to walk with us, encourage us, and help us out when life gets tough, and we in turn need to be a support to others.

It is important to remember, though, that human support can be imperfect and fleeting.  It will never provide us with all that we need- we cannot expect that of others, and we cannot expect it of ourselves as we seek to support those around us (something I need to keep reminding myself of!)

We need something greater- a reliable support, something on which we can lean our whole weight and know that it will hold.

And fortunately, that’s exactly what we have:

“For I hold you by your right hand- I, the Lord your God.  And I say to you, “Don’t be afraid.  I am here to help you.”  (Isaiah 41:13 NLT)

“Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.”  (Deuteronomy 31:8 NLT)

“The eternal God is your refuge, and his everlasting arms are under you.”  (Deuteronomy 33:27 NLT)

His arms are strong enough to hold it all, and he will never abandon us or forsake us, so let’s run to him and find our refuge in him today.

  1. You are so right, Lesley! The people in our lives are just like us, imperfect. Training myself and my children to look to Him first and always. My youngest son said, “But when I pray at night He never answers me.” Oh, how innocent. Have a blessed Friday! I am actually your neighbor today 🙂 Julie

    1. Definitely! Reminding ourselves, and teaching others, to depend on God first is so important, even if his response to us isn’t always what we expect. Hope you have a great day!

    1. I love Cornerstone too, Debby, and music is such a great way of knowing God’s support. It’s reassuring to know we can rely on God’s support when other things seem uncertain- I know you’ve experienced that over the last couple of weeks.

  2. Beautiful post, Lesley.

When I think of the everlasting arms, I put a different spin on ‘arms’ and the Heckler and Koch G3 rifle comes to mind. It’s heavy, makes no concessions to ergonomics (HK is German, after all), and kicks like an irritated burro…but it will never, ever let you down.

So maybe God carries a G3.

    1. Thanks, Andrew! As well as remembering God’s arms supporting us it is comforting to remember his power and that he will fight for us so I think your take on “arms” works too!

  3. Oh Lesley thank you for all of the encouraging verses! We are so fortunate to have our loving God care about every detail of our lives. Nothing gets by Him.
    Have a wonderful week!
