This post is written to link with Five Minute Friday. Write for five minutes on a one-word prompt. The prompt today is “simplify.”
Sometimes life just seems so complicated.
Relationships are difficult, questions remain unanswered, unforeseen circumstances disrupt your carefully-laid plans. It seems like no matter what you do to bring some order to the chaos, it just spirals further out of control, and none of it seems to make any sense.
I remember a day like that. I was driving to visit my friend who had recently been diagnosed with anorexia. Although I had suspected it for some time and the news came as no surprise, it felt complicated. Until then she had been unwilling to talk about it. Now she was open to it, I didn’t know what to say.
There were deeper questions: Where was God in all this? Why was it happening? Why had all my prayers for her seemed to go unanswered?
That week I was going to be leading at a children’s holiday club and I needed to get familiar with some of the songs, so as I drove, I started the playlist. A song began: Fully Rely On God.
“Our God is so powerful- nothing’s too hard for him,
And our God is reliable- so good he never changes.
God, he made me- he knows what I need better than anyone.
God, he loves me- he only wants good things for me.
So I’m gonna fully rely on God, I’m going to trust him with all I’ve got.
I know he will never let me down.
Fully rely on God, I’m going to trust him with all I’ve got.
Fully rely on God, cos he can do anything!”
It was exactly what I needed to remind me of the simple truth:
- God is powerful- he can do anything.
- God is reliable and we can trust him.
- God made me and he made my friend- he sees and he knows and he loves.
- God has a good plan for us.
Instead of trying to understand a complicated situation what I needed to do was hand it over to God and hold to these simple truths.
When there is so much that I don’t know, it’s better to hold on to the truth that I do know. Instead of trying to understand and control, I need to trust.
Sometimes I think it’s not as complicated as we make it.
“Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty.
I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp.
Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk.
Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me.
O Israel, put your hope in the Lord— now and always.” (Psalm 131 NLT)
Enjoyed your encouraging post. We can trust God in all things! I’m visiting from FMF.

I love how those simple children’s songs express the truth in just the way we need it! HE is the one who holds all of the answers, and sometimes we are the ones who make it so complicated. Thank you for sharing these precious truths today!

I absolutely know I’m the one who makes things complicated. You gave the best reminder in how to simplify it. If only I could do it more than preach it.

Thanks, Debby! I definitely need to preach this to myself and get better at simplifying!

I like your understanding that complications arise when we don’t remember God.

Thanks, Gabriele! Remembering that God is in charge and we’re not does simplify things.

I find myself there too, Lesley. Asking why. Your post encouraged me not to come down on myself and just remember the simple truth. May God bless you, Julie

Several years ago, I heard that acronym for the first time–F.R.O.G (Fully rely in God) It often is found on bracelets etc.

Yes it’s a good way to remember. We used to have the bracelets here too!

Indeed, Lesley. The only way through complicated situations is to rest in the simple truths whispered to us from the mouth of God Almighty. He alone carries us.

Yes, it’s reassuring that even when we can’t make sense of a situation we can know God is with us and will help us through.

Hold on to the truth that we know. I love those wise words! When focusing on the truth, my worries and anxious thoughts are given over to his promises and peace results. And don’t complicate things. Great post Lesley!

That is a mic drop moment, girl! It needs to be written on my wall! Thank you. Loved this post today! Love the song too!

Thanks, Martha! It isn’t always easy to let go of what we can’t understand, but it does bring peace when we can hand those things over to God!

Great post, Lesley. I’m beginning to see…better late than too late…that the simplest thing to do is to accept the complexity, without either pushing back or trying too hard to understand.

Thanks, Andrew! There are so many things we can’t understand. It’s definitely not easy, but it does simplify things if we can leave those in God’s hands!

Hi Lesley! I think your conclusion about not needing to understand, but to rely on God is just perfect. As a science minded person, I always want to know the details, to understand what’s going on. You know, you can drive yourself crazy doing that.
I think it’s more important to be present and loving than to necessarily understand everything. Does that make sense? I bet you were just the right person to bring friendship and comfort to your friend in need.
God bless,
Ceil

Thanks, Ceil! Yes, I do drive myself crazy trying to understand at times! 🙂 But yes, being present and showing love, even in the midst of our lack of understanding is so important.
