Songs Of Truth

Life has felt busy lately – various pressures and looming deadlines have meant that, even when I do take time to pause and rest, it’s hard to relax my mind.

In times like these, one of the things that helps me the most is music.  It grounds me in truth, it calms me, and it sticks with me throughout the busyness of the day.

It’s been a while since I did a music post, so I’m keeping it simple today.  Here are some of the songs that have been helping me hold to truth lately.

Living Hope – Phil Wickham

A powerful reminder of all that Jesus has done for us, and that we can trust him to be our living hope.

“How great the chasm that lay between us,
How high the mountain I could not climb.
In desperation, I turned to heaven,
And spoke Your name into the night.
Then through the darkness, Your loving-kindness
Tore through the shadows of my soul,
The work is finished, the end is written,
Jesus Christ, my living hope.”

Haven’t Seen It Yet – Danny Gokey

Encouragement that even when our prayers seem to go unanswered, God still has good plans for us.  Even though we may not see now what he is doing, one day it may become clear.

“It’s like the brightest sunrise
Waiting on the other side of the darkest night.
Don’t ever lose hope, hold on and believe.
Maybe you just haven’t seen it, just haven’t seen it yet.”

Rescue – Lauren Daigle

A beautiful song which points us to hope in those times when we feel abandoned and forgotten.  A great reminder that we are seen by God and he goes to great lengths to rescue us.

“You are not hidden
There’s never been a moment
You were forgotten
You are not hopeless
Though you have been broken
Your innocence stolen

I hear you whisper underneath your breath
I hear your SOS, your SOS.
I will send out an army to find You
In the middle of the darkest night
It’s true, I will rescue you.”

One Awkward Moment – Casting Crowns

Encouragement that God can use us and use our stories to impact others and draw them to him.  It may mean taking a risk and it may feel awkward, but surely it’s worthwhile to be used by God.

“One word, one hand,
Tell me, is that too high a price?
One awkward moment
Could be the one that saves a life.
Your hurt, your scars,
God will use to open up her eyes.
One awkward moment,
You’ll see the gospel come alive,
Come alive.”

Only Jesus – Casting Crowns

This song always draws me back to what really matters.  It’s not about me; it’s about Jesus, and my focus should be on honouring him.

“Make it count, leave a mark, build a name for yourself,
Dream your dreams, chase your heart, above all else
Make a name the world remembers.
But all an empty world can sell is empty dreams.
I got lost in the light when it was up to me
To make a name the world remembers,
But Jesus is the only name to remember.”

What about you?  I always love getting new song recommendations.  What songs have been pointing you to truth lately?

  1. Love the songs, Lesley

The truth of my life today
is the hard truth of death,
and I must ever find a way
to fight and claw for breath.
Around a tumour cold and hard
I try to force the air,
    and sometimes that way is barred;
    does God no longer care?
    Nay, hark the clarion call
He’s with me in this fight
and His Son gave His all
    to forever defeat the night.
    The Via Dolorosa calls,
but He lifts my heart above its walls.

Here’s a song that speaks my truth…”Bring It’, by Trapt.

  3. I love these songs, Lesley. I, too, find songs can really help to ground us in the truth. The Danny Gokey one and The Awkward Moment are new to me, so thank you for introducing them. 🙂 The song that has been helping me these last days is one that will be in my post tomorrow – I Have This Hope by Tenth Avenue North. This morning I woke up with an old song in my mind – Tell It To Jesus. It was such a needed reminder that Jesus is a Faithful Friend and He invites us to share our questions, weariness, and worries with Him, even though He already knows them. Love and blessings to you!

  6. My last post was around a song. Music is my go to for most things. I miss singing in a choir, in California there are few church choir, usually worship teams. Love your song choice.

  7. Lesley, we like a number of the same groups/singers. I loved these songs. Thanks so much for sharing them.

I’ve found, especially in this past year (or perhaps it’s a re-found thing) that music has helped me stay grounded when life swirled around me in dizzying overwhelmingness. God has made music powerful.

    Have a good weekend, friend.
