Dear Younger Me,
Let’s talk about following Jesus today.
I know you’ve made that decision, and I know that it’s real. I know that you try to live it out and it does have an impact on your life, but I also know that you struggle and you get distracted, and you’re still trying to figure out how it all works.
You feel pulled in different directions at times, because you want to live for Jesus, but you also want to fit in with those around you.
Take a look at what Jesus said:
“Then, calling the crowd to join his disciples, he said, “If any of you wants to be my follower, you must give up your own way, take up your cross, and follow me.” (Mark 8:34 NLT)
I think sometimes following Jesus is portrayed as easy. Come to him, and receive love and forgiveness, be accepted, find hope and a purpose…
All of that is absolutely true, but so is the reality that the call to follow him is the call to deny ourselves. It will mean challenge, and it will mean opposition, and it will mean that you can’t always fit in with those around you.
I don’t say that to put you off – following Jesus is definitely worth it – I say it to prepare you, and to help you think it through.
As I said yesterday, an important part of living it out is joining with other Christians, but it’s also important that you spend time yourself reading the Bible and praying, and seeking God’s help to live for him.
Being a Christian is not just reading the Bible and going to church. It’s not just believing in Jesus. It’s following him and living for him.
It’s an amazing privilege – we get to join in with the work God is doing here on earth!
Of course he could easily do it without us, but he chooses to involve us, to do his work in us and through us, and you get to join in with that!
If you will take your commitment to follow him seriously he will use you in ways you’d never have imagined, and I urge you to do that. There will be challenges and there will be a cost, but the joy of being part of what God is doing will make it all worthwhile.
This post is part of “Dear Younger Me…” – a series for Write 31 Days in October 2019. Each day I am basing my writing on the one-word prompt provided. Today the prompt is “join.”
You can find an introduction to the series and an index of all the posts here, and you can find out more about the challenge and check out other people’s series here.
