Dear Younger Me,
You already know that life isn’t always easy, and, as I already warned you, you are going to face difficulties as you go through life. Everyone does!
My message for you today is simple – whatever challenges you face, you’re better facing them with God than without him.
When hard times come, there’s always a danger of doubts creeping in: if God really loved me, why did he let that happen? As I said, it’s ok to ask why, though you won’t always get the answers you seek, but please don’t let your pain and your questions turn you away from God.
I remember during one of the hardest times of my life, a friend who was also struggling, asked a question: “What’s the point in being a Christian? Bad things still happen to us just the same as other people.”
He had no idea of what I was going through at that point, and I had no idea what I was going to say, but the words just came pouring out my mouth:
“Think of the worst thing you’ve ever been through or the thing you’re most struggling to deal with. Now try to imagine facing it without God.”
I could see that the words hit home for him, but they hit home for me too. Immediately I began imagining facing my current challenges without God and almost as quickly I stopped because it was a possibility I didn’t even want to contemplate!
Without God, there doesn’t seem to be a point. Things happen – good or bad – and they’re meaningless.
With God, there is always hope. No matter what we go through, we can trust that he is still in charge and that he has a plan for good. We can hold onto hope that he can redeem our situation and use it for good.
There’s no guarantee that will happen quickly or easily, but either way you’re better with him than without him, so don’t give up!
This post is part of “Dear Younger Me…” – a series for Write 31 Days in October 2019. Each day I am basing my writing on the one-word prompt provided. Today the prompt is “better.” You can find an introduction to the series and an index of all the posts here, and you can find out more about the challenge and check out other people’s series here.
