The Still, Small Voice

This post is written to link with Five Minute Friday: write for five minutes on a one-word prompt.  The prompt today is “loud.”

So much noise and so many voices,
Whirling and swirling all around us,
Opinions and hearsay, “facts” that contradict one another,
Disagreements and tension that dominate our time and attention,
Distracting us and unsettling us,
Instilling doubt and fear, and threatening to pull us under.

It’s all so loud!

But, wait – can you hear it?
Beneath the turmoil of the wind and the waves,
That still, small voice?
Often drowned out, but always constant,
Stability and hope even in the midst of the storm.

Stop, and breathe,
Listen to its whisper:

“Do not be afraid, for I am with you.” (Isaiah 41:10 NLT)

“Come to me all you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28 NLT)

“The peace I give is a gift the world cannot give.”  (John 14:27 NLT)

“Be still, and know that I am God.”  (Psalm 46:10 NLT)

It may not be loud, but it’s there – always.

  1. You’d really think that God might say,
    “The heck with it, I’m done;
do these dolts think it’s all croquet,
    the torture of My Son
to win them back what had been lost,
    what they could never gain
at any vain and human cost,
for they had not the Name
that beat the devil to the ground,
that stood to take the lash,
that rolled away the stone and found
    that most still wanted cash?”
And then God sighed (and He was cryin’),
“I’ll pay some more, for they are Mine.”

  2. You know, I hadn’t thought about it til reading your post just now–but maybe that’s part of what Satan is up to in the world now–trying to drown out that still small voice. May we who know God never let that happen. May we always make time and quiet and space to listen.

I love that hymn. Haven’t heard it in a long while.

    1. Thanks, Barbara! Yes, we especially need that still small voice just now! I hadn’t heard that hymn in years either but for some reason it started going through my head as I was writing!

  3. So good! I have been hearing the phrase “still small voice” over and over this week. This was a wonderful reminder of that, and a great way to tie in to all the confusion going on right now. Grace and peace to you. #26FMF

  4. What a comfort – and powerful truth – that the still small voice is always there. It is just for us to listen. To be still and to hear. I love the way you reminded me of that truth! Great post!!
